InfoTrends/CAP Ventures 2004 U.S. Production Copying & Printing Placements Report Shows 13.1% Market Increase

(Weymouth, MA) April 18, 2005…According to InfoTrends/CAP Ventures research, the U.S. production copying and printing market increased by 13.1% from 2003-2004, exceeding previous forecast predictions. This hefty growth was due to the improved U.S. economy, pent-up demand, and significant new product introductions. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures defines the production environment as staffed facilities that primarily copy/print the work of others. This includes commercial printers, digital printing specialists, copy centers, quick printers, in-plant print shops, and other specialty printers.

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ report entitled 2003-2004 U.S. Production Copying & Printing Placements: Summary and Trends provides a placement summary for 2003 and 2004 for the On Demand, Data Processing, and Production Copying markets. It also includes an overview of the major market trends that impact placements. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures will publish its forecast numbers at the end of May.

Some key findings include:

  • Placements in the print-on-demand (POD) market increased nearly 17% over 2003.
  • The success of the black & white and color POD markets was driven in large part by placements of copier/printer solutions.
  • Color was an extremely active area as color-capable Universal Copier/Printers (UCPs) entered the market in large numbers and contributed to a 55% year-over-year growth in 24+ ppm copier/printers in POD environments.
  • Canon and Xerox competed for the top market share spot in many categories. Other top finishers included IBM Printing Systems, Konica Minolta, and Heidelberg.

“This year’s placement report contains greatly expanded placement and market share coverage, providing additional detail for every segment including a new segment we’ve added, Universal Copier/Printers,” commented Jim Hamilton, Director of InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ On Demand Printing & Publishing Consulting Service. “We believe this additional detail will be particularly valuable and will provide insight into developments in key market subsegments.”
