CAP Ventures Releases New Report on All-in-One Cartridges

(Weymouth, MA) July 16, 2003…According to new research by CAP Ventures, the overall market for all-in-one (AIO) cartridges is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6% between 2001 and 2006. Within the AIO market, OEMs are expected to outperform the aftermarket in the monochrome and color segments. The results of this research are available immediately in a report entitled U.S. All-in-One Cartridge Market Report

The aftermarket share of cartridges peaked in 2002. The recession gave aftermarket products a boost, as consumers looked for less expensive alternatives. In late 2002 and 2003, however, there were a large number of new product introductions, such as HP's LaserJet 1300, 2300, 4200, and 4300. The aftermarket will need time to gain momentum on these cartridges, as they work to develop new solutions to compete with OEMs. As a result, CAP Ventures predicts a dip in aftermarket share until 2006, by which time it is expected that the aftermarket will have gained significant shares of the newer cartridges.

The use of smart chips and Lexmark’s Prebate program will continue to slow aftermarket penetration rates. Theses issues will likely be decided in the courts and will have a long-term impact on the ongoing competition between OEMs and the aftermarket.

Neither group is expected to gain a significant upper hand on the monochrome side of the market. Nevertheless, OEMs will dominate in the color market for the foreseeable future. Color raises the standards all around, and for the time being, OEMs are best suited to meet these standards.   All in all, despite temporary share shifts, OEMs and aftermarket suppliers will continue coexisting with each other.

CAP Ventures' research report is available immediately to clients of CAP Ventures’ North American Communication Supplies Consulting Service.
