Online Photo Services Used by 19% of U.S. Internet Households, According to New Report by InfoTrends Research Group

(Weymouth, MA) May, 07 2003... InfoTrends Research Group’s latest study of online photo service users indicates that 19% of U.S. Internet households have used an online photo service, and offers evidence that many non-users are interested in trying one. Usage of online photo services is increasing rapidly, as the average number of photos posted per month nearly doubled to 24 photos and the average number of prints ordered online per month increased by more than 30% over last year.

The ability to create personalized online photo albums and easily share numerous photos with several people at one time is the most compelling reason that consumers choose to use an online photo service. “While this photo sharing benefit initially attracts new members, online photo service providers need to convert more of these members into paying customers,” says Jill Aldort, a Research Analyst at InfoTrends Research Group. “In 2002, some online photo service providers were able to increase print revenues and achieve profitability. All providers need to continue to develop strategies that increase print revenues to outpace the cost of hosting, and consider new ways to profit from photo sharing.”

InfoTrends new end user analysis entitled "Online Photo Services End User Survey: Converting Users to Buyers" is available immediately. The 77-page study with 81 figures and two sets of tabulations reveals in-depth trends in online photo sharing and online photofinishing, online photofinishing in comparison to home printing, premium memberships, demographics, and more. Results of a separate InfoTrends study entitled “Digital Camera End User Survey” are also available.
