Digital Camera Sales Capture 21% of Worldwide Camera Market in 2001

(Weymouth, MA) September, 25 2001... A new study from InfoTrends Research Group projects that worldwide shipments of low end digital cameras will reach 17.7 million units in 2001, capturing 21% of total worldwide camera sales. Film camera sales in Japan, North America and Europe are beginning to decline largely as a result of growth in the digital camera market. By 2006, digital camera sales are expected to capture 63% of the total worldwide camera market. Revenue from digital camera sales is forecast to reach $9.9 billion in 2006.

"The worldwide economic situation is expected to impact digital camera sales in the short term, but this product category will remain more resilient than others," says Michelle Slaughter, market research analyst, InfoTrends Research Group. "Digital cameras remain a top-selling consumer electronics product category due to compelling benefits - the ability to view and share digital photos immediately and incorporate digital photos into a variety of applications."

North America is the leading market for digital camera unit sales, and will remain so through the forecast period. In 2001, it represents 47% of the worldwide market. Japan is currently the second leading market with 25% of digital camera sales, though sales of digital cameras in Europe will surpass Japan within the forecast period. The market in Japan is expected to reach a saturation point before U.S. and Europe.

Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Kodak and Canon are the top-five ranked worldwide digital camera vendors. In 2001, Sony is forecast to surpass Olympus as the worldwide market leader. The company has been the market leader in North America with a comfortable margin over its competitors over the last four years, and its position in Japan and Europe continues to grow.

The new report, "2001 Worldwide Digital Camera Forecast Summary," summarizes InfoTrends' in-depth market forecast reports for North America, Japan, and Europe. It sizes the low end digital camera market, outlines key vendors and trends, and projects unit shipments, revenues, and price declines through 2006 by region. The report is available immediately in hard copy and electronic format.
