Corporate Print Services: The In-Plant Printing Opportunity

# Pages: 670 (including data tabluations)
# Figures: 75
Publication Date: March 2004
Service: On Demand Printing & Publishing
Region: North America

Introduction

This study examines the full range of corporate printing services, from Central Reproduction Departments to the mailroom that also performs production copying and printing. It determines what is really transpiring in the world of corporate printing services, defines the various segments of the corporate printing services market, and provides insight into what is produced on-site versus off-site and why. It also probes the speed and nature of the migration to electronic distribution of internal and external corporate information at the expense of overall print volumes, as well as the impact of the proliferation of distributed multifunctional peripherals on print volumes in centralized corporate print services facilities.

The study determines the current penetration and volume of digital printing and the expected future share of monochrome and color volumes. The results will help clients better define opportunities in the market and formulate a vision of the in-plant shop of the future.

Key Findings

  • Most work produced internally is black & white (75%)
  • Over half of the work is received electronically
  • Market penetration of facilities management is relatively low and more common in the small copy/print sites
  • The in-plant print shop specifies 62.3% of all paper used in the facility
  • The vast majority of in-plant print shops have offset presses
  • Over 63% of in-plant print shops have plans to migrate work from offset to digital and anticipate moving a significant percentage of that work in the next two years
  • There was widespread agreement to the statement, “PDF-based workflow will gain importance to me and my clients” (77%)
  • 29% of the in-plant print shops offer departmental copier fleet management
