Corporate Printing Services: The European In-Plant Printing Opportunity

# Pages: 123
# Figures: 110
Publication Date: May 2005
Service: On Demand Printing & Publishing - Europe
Region: Europe

Introduction

This study addresses European in-plant printing establishments, one of the least understood market segments in the document production and management industry. This research is extremely relevant given the growing connectedness of enterprises, the use of content management systems (CMS), and the increasing adoption of electronic document and records management systems (EDRMS).

This study examines an extensive range of enterprise printing services, from Central Reproduction Departments to mailrooms that also perform production copying and printing. It offers insights into on-site versus off-site production and the reasons for the “make or buy” dichotomy displayed. We provide direct intelligence on the current and potential role of the in-plant market in the expansion of electronic distribution of internal and external corporate information. The study also defines opportunities in the enterprise in-plant market and share a vision of the in-plant site of the future.

Key Findings

  • Colour scanners are the most popular prepress equipment products across all markets, particularly given the need to better manage and make legacy documents available in electronic form. Scanning-related services present an opportunity as well, particularly if they are tied to an FM or outsourcing model.
  • Colour production services are critical to ensuring a robust market position within the in-plant environment, and greater use of colour technology can be expected.
  • We believe that the market will continue to procure print externally, and that the U.K. will continue to lead the market in this area. UCPs may increase the practice of insourcing page volumes back from commercial printers and in-plant print shops.
  • Digital colour devices in the 24-59 ppm segment will continue to be in demand, and there is merit in further exploring the German market in an effort to bring that region’s installed base up to U.K. levels.
