InfoTrends’ research suggests that the total system revenue from wide format UV-curable inkjet printing systems, which includes hardware, ink, media, and the value of service contracts, amounted to $1.1 billion in 2008. Over the forecast period, InfoTrends expects the market to grow 15.9% annually, reaching $2.33 billion in 2013. This means that UV-curable inkjet represents the fastest growing technology in the wide format digital printing market.
Wide format UV-curable inkjet has quickly evolved from primarily a flatbed inkjet printing technology to one that is much more capable and versatile. New ink formulations and new print head technologies have created a market that is much more cost-competitive with solvent inkjet and is able to produce key wide format digital print applications at greater speeds than any other wide format technology. The wide format UV-curable market withstood the poor economic conditions better than any of the competing wide format graphics production technologies due to end users’ interest in the speed and efficient production delivered by UV-curable inkjet, as well as the ability of this technology to overcome the environmental disadvantages of solvent inkjet. Nearly all of the major wide format equipment manufacturers now have some role in the UV-curable inkjet segment, and InfoTrends is also seeing strong market participation from many of the leading companies in the distribution channel.
