The French, German, and the United Kingdom Supplies Markets

Introduction

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures recently released of three new reports examining the supplies markets in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Each report provides an economic overview for the country; details market shares for paper, specialty media, toner, ink, and ribbons; and projects regional growth rates from 2003-2008.

The United Kingdom is Leading

The U.K. is one of the fastest growing supplies markets in Europe, and is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.5% from 2003-2008 reaching €6.5 billion by the end of the forecast period.

Figure 1: U.K. Supplies Summary – 2008 (€6.5 billion)

The growth rate for the U.K. market is higher than the growth rate for the Western European supplies market as whole (1.8%), and this reflects the healthy state of the U.K. economy.

The two key markets are inkjet supplies and page printer supplies. To a lesser degree, one can also say that copier supplies also play a role.

Germany Overview

In Germany, supplies revenues are expected to increase slightly through 2008. Slowing economic performance and reduced consumer spending are obstacles vendors in this market are facing. Nevertheless, as with other countries, there is a bright spot in this market with inkjet and page printer supplies. Accounting for 79% of total supplies revenues, inkjet and page printer supplies revenues currently dominate the German market and are expected to continue to do so.

Colour page printers will see the strongest growth rate, leading to a healthy growth in supplies revenues. In addition to page printer supplies, inkjet supplies remain one of the biggest revenue generators. Inkjet vendors are developing new techniques to improve the speed, performance, image quality, and cost per page ratios of inkjet devices.

French Supplies Market

The French market, along with the U.K. and Germany, is one of the largest communication supplies markets in Europe, as well as one of the most mature. The French market currently accounts for about 17% of the total Western European market in terms of revenue.

Inkjet, page printers, and copiers are main drivers of this region’s growth. Colour output will fuel growth for page printers and copiers, with the majority coming from page printers.  We also expect growth in the colour market to accelerate as more applications that traditionally would have been outsourced are transitioned into the office.
