Introduction

In InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ forecast entitled Western European Print On Demand Market Forecast: 2003-2008, analysts capture the current state and future growth prospects for equipment, consumables, services, and the value of pages produced by Print On Demand. The report also provides a forecast on the related areas of the Data Processing market.

Market Size

The Western European production copying and digital printing market consists of the combined print on demand (POD) and data processing markets. According to InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, this market accounted for €7.6 billion in equipment, supplies, and service revenue in 2003. This figure is expected to reach €10.8 billion by 2008, representing a healthy Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7%.

Printing Market Summary

Print on demand is the growth component of the production copying and digital printing market, with equipment, supplies, and service revenues expected to demonstrate a CAGR of 9.8% to reach €9.7 billion in 2008. Factors such as a maturing digital printing market, increasing POD print volumes, increased usage of colour, and higher consumable revenues for this market are the primary drivers for print on demand’s growth.
POD Retail Value: Colour Craze

The Retail value of print was €23.4 billion in 2003 and is projected to reach €42.4 billion by 2008, representing a CAGR of 12.6%. Main drivers are again higher print volumes per device and an increasing share of colour output.

Figure 2: Retail Value of Print On Demand – Colour and Black & White

Of the €23.4 billion in retail value of print in 2003, approximately €17.7 billion was in colour while €5.7 billion was in black & white, representing just under a quarter of the total value. By 2008, that share will decline to 17.4% as colour is showing a dramatic increase of 14.6% CAGR.

Data Processing

There are three primary subsegments to the data processing market: in-house corporate data centres, data processing service bureaus, and direct mail printers. There are also specialty print operations such as industrial printing and check printing that are represented in this forecast.

Data processing placements increased from 2,940 units in 2002 to 3,041 units in 2003, representing a CAGR of 3%.  Although the data processing market is mature, it remains sizable and continues to represent a significant annuity opportunity for vendors. One reason for this is that the typical data centre device is producing a large number of impressions, much more, in fact, than a typical print-on-demand device. The annuity stream per machine, therefore, will remain a very attractive revenue source.
